Domain Authority vs Domain Rating: What the Scores Really Mean

Domain Authority (DA), Domain Rating (DR), and Authority Score are third-party metrics, not Google rankings. Here's what each measures, how to read them, and how not to be fooled.

Updated September 2026

Domain Authority (DA), Domain Rating (DR), and Authority Score are scores invented by SEO tool companies — Moz, Ahrefs, and Semrush respectively — to estimate how strong a website's backlink profile is. They run from 0 to 100 on a logarithmic scale. They are useful for comparison and research, but they are not used by Google, and no third-party metric determines your rankings. Treat them as a weather forecast, not the weather.

What each score measures

  • Domain Rating (DR, Ahrefs): the strength of a site's backlink profile, based largely on the quantity and quality of referring domains. It ignores content and traffic.
  • Domain Authority (DA, Moz): a machine-learning estimate of how likely a domain is to rank, trained against search results and driven mostly by link data.
  • Authority Score (Semrush): a blend of link power, estimated organic traffic, and a spam-signal component, so it leans slightly less link-only than the others.

Why the scale trips people up

Because these scores are logarithmic, moving from 20 to 30 is far easier than moving from 70 to 80. A brand-new site sits near zero and can climb into the 20s or 30s with a handful of good links; the top of the scale is reserved for the Wikipedias and major news sites of the world. Don't be discouraged by a low number early on, and don't obsess over one-point changes — they are noise.

How to actually use these metrics

  1. Compare, don't worship: use a score to judge whether one potential link source is stronger than another, not as a target in itself.
  2. Look past the number: a DR 60 site with fake, irrelevant traffic is a worse link than a DR 25 site full of your exact audience.
  3. Watch the trend: your own score rising steadily over months is a healthy sign; a sudden spike often means someone pointed spammy links at you.
  4. Never buy links sold on DA/DR alone: 'get a DA 50 backlink for $10' is the classic tell of a link scheme.

The bottom line

Authority scores are a convenient shorthand for 'how strong is this site's link profile,' nothing more. Use them to prioritize your outreach and to sanity-check a directory or blog before you invest time. But the goal is real relevance and trust — the score is a side effect of doing the right things, not the thing itself.
